Omibalance, with a twist
There will not be a change in the design philosophy. Sony, in the Z5 and in the Z5 Compact, has decided to continue under the umbrella of Omibalance, an aspect that has impressed its high-end phones, the most affordable ones such as its tablets. However, the Japanese have decided to introduce slight changes to the finishes and materials to convey a sense of evolution on the outside of the terminal, a fundamental aspect when a generation change occurs.
Thus in this way, we find a brushed aluminium frame and, on the other hand, the material chosen for the back of the phone is frosted glass, tempered glass with a matte finish that provides a pleasant sensation to the touch. In addition, the choice of this 'ingredient' has allowed the range of colours - gold, graphite black, silver and green - depending on the light it receives, to have reflections of different shades. Something that we had already seen in other competing phones.
On the other hand, the multinational has wanted to give value to its brand of Xperia terminals in their design. That is why it has included an engraving on one of the edges of the phone. All these changes have managed to convey the feeling of greater unity of the terminal. As we mentioned, the colours in which the Z5 will be available will be graphite black, green, gold and silver. On the other hand, the Z5 compact will be available in black, white, red and lemon yellow.
IP 68 and fingerprint sensor
Resistance to water and dust has been one of the hallmarks that Sony wanted to print on their smartphones. After taking it to the mid-range with the Xperia M4 Aqua, now it perpetuates it in its high range, as expected. And all this with the micro USB port and the headphone jack on the air. Only the slot for the microSD card and the nanoSIM is what holds the lid. As has been rumoured, the Xperia Z5 and the rest of the terminals presented today in Berlin will have a fingerprint reader on the unlock button located on the side of the phone.
A position is never seen so far and the truth is that if the sensor responds well, it seems a frankly comfortable position. It is activated by pressing the button we mentioned. On the other hand, this fingerprint sensor will also serve to manage Android profiles. This is to avoid problems when lending the phone, for example, to your young child. It will allow you to store your fingerprint and as soon as you press the button, you will directly access the profile in question that we have created on your terminal.
Full HD screen and Snapdragon 810
The screen remains intact at the 5.2-inch diagonal -4.6 in the case of the Compact - and, in this case, it does not enter the war of 2K or Quad HD as other manufacturers have done. They assure Sony that, with 700 candelas, this IPS panel can offer great quality even in bright sunlight, a situation in which some terminals tend to suffer a lot. In addition to brightness, they ensure that they have improved colour and contrast thanks to the Sparkling Contrast Live Color Creator - an evolution of Triluminos technology - to achieve a large screen.
In the case of the heart of the phone, the choice will give a lot to talk about. The Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact will have inside the review of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm's 'patched' SoC that gave HTC so many headaches and the One M9, among others. From the Japanese factory, they are convinced of the good performance of this chip.
To complement this it will work with 3GB of RAM, which on paper if everything responds, should provide a remarkable user experience. The internal memory, meanwhile, will be 32 GB by default although it can be expanded with an extra 200 GB by MicroSD. In the case of the Z5 Compact, it will be 2GB, since by maintaining a smaller screen, the demands in this section are lower.
The battery reaches up to 2900 mAh capacity, which with average use - as well as the STAMINA Mode of the Xperia - ensures that it can give up to two days without having to recharge the phone. One of the novelties is the inclusion of Quick Charge, which will allow with 30 minutes of charge to accumulate up to 60% of energy. Some features that the Z5 Compact will also have, which keeps its battery at 2,700 mAh.
The camera: an object to take into account
As we well know, Sony is one of the main providers of photographic sensors on the market and many pay attention to each of the evolutions of their flagship. So in the Z3, we saw how they evolved to achieve an ISO of up to 12,800. However, the Z5's camera - and its Compact and Premium versions - presents a notable leap from the previous generation.
To begin with, we are looking at a new 23-megapixel sensor developed in conjunction with the Sony Alpha division. The camera will come with a new post-processing algorithm and an autofocus system of just 0.03 seconds. The lens aperture will be f / 1.8.
